What this book explores
James W. Fowler proposes six stages through which the structures of faith may develop, drawing on interviews and structural-developmental psychology. Faith here means the ways people organize meaning, loyalty, identity, and relationship to what they consider ultimate, not simply whether they hold religious beliefs.

Why it’s in the Library
The framework can help travelers recognize that changing faith may involve a change in how meaning is held, not only which propositions are accepted. It also shaped pastoral care and popular accounts of spiritual development. The Library includes it as an influential historical theory to examine, never as a test that can diagnose a traveler or certify that one worldview is more mature.

Know before you begin…
The interview sample, proposed universality, fixed sequence, gender assumptions, cultural reach, and hierarchy have received substantial criticism. Stages must not be used to rank partners, churches, religions, or people who remain traditional. Real lives can recur, combine, resist, or move outside the model, and developmental language does not determine truth.
