What this book explores
Amy-Jill Levine and Marc Zvi Brettler examine passages from Israel's Scriptures that Christians have read in relation to Jesus, including creation, exodus, prophecy, suffering, messiah, and resurrection. For each, they place the Hebrew Bible's historical and literary meanings beside later Jewish interpretation and New Testament or Christian rereading, showing both genuine continuity and consequential difference.

Why it’s in the Library
It equips Christian-origin travelers to recognize how familiar readings can become invisible when they are heard only inside one tradition. By giving Jewish interpretations real space rather than using them as background for a Christian conclusion, the book interrupts supersessionist habits and models informed comparison. It also shows that shared texts do not guarantee shared meanings, and that disagreement can be studied without caricature.

Know before you begin…
The book is long and passage-driven rather than a quick interfaith overview. Historical-critical conclusions may unsettle devotional assumptions, and Christian readers may find that cherished prophecies look different in their earlier contexts. The authors do not speak for every Jewish or Christian interpreter, and ‘Jewish reading’ must not be treated as a single view. Comparison here clarifies difference; it does not require either tradition to surrender its theology.
