Rather than constructing one definitive doctrine, she brings memoir, scripture, tradition, and lived experience into conversation and shows how a relationship with Jesus can change without simply disappearing.

People reconsidering inherited Christianity often assume they must either preserve one authorized image of Jesus or leave Jesus behind. Bass offers a gentle, readable alternative: several images may carry truth at different moments, and honest change can become part of theology rather than evidence of failure.

This is one progressive Christian testimony, not a representative survey of Christian beliefs or a historical biography of Jesus. Bass’s six images arise from her own American Protestant journey and do not exhaust the ways global Christians or other traditions understand Jesus. Memoir can invite recognition but does not by itself establish theological claims.
