Martin demonstrates how one informed Christian reader lets scholarship question and deepen faith without pretending the two methods answer every question in the same way. His pilgrimage structure also makes the material more human than a conventional survey.

Traditions surrounding particular sites vary in historical confidence, and Martin’s prayerful interpretations go beyond what historical study can establish. Readers seeking a nonconfessional reconstruction may prefer a historical study; readers from other Christian traditions may not share every Catholic assumption.
