A LIBRARIAN’S ORIENTATION

What this book explores

Annaka Harris introduces the mystery of subjective experience through short thought experiments about perception, free will, the self, and whether consciousness may be more basic in nature than we usually assume. The book is less a survey of the field than an invitation to notice how strange ordinary awareness becomes when examined closely.

EDITORIAL NOTE

Why it’s in the Library

Travelers often reach this territory through wonder rather than technical study. Harris provides a concise, readable doorway into the explanatory gap and into panpsychism as one possible response, while giving the library a perspective that differs sharply from brain-only and illusionist accounts.

Good starting place if…

You want a short philosophical exploration of why consciousness is hard to explain and are open to considering possibilities beyond the usual idea that brains simply produce it.

Know before you begin…

Harris treats panpsychism seriously and finds common intuitions about free will and the self difficult to defend. These are live philosophical positions, not conclusions established by neuroscience. Showing that current explanations are incomplete does not by itself prove that consciousness is a fundamental property of matter.
