A LIBRARIAN’S ORIENTATION
What this book explores
Psychologist Gabriele Oettingen explains why pleasant fantasies about a desired future can sometimes reduce the energy needed to reach it. Her method of mental contrasting joins a meaningful wish to its best outcome, the inner obstacle that may interfere, and a concrete plan for responding.
EDITORIAL NOTE
Why it’s in the Library
This is the shelf's clearest evidence-based counterweight to manifestation teachings that stop at imagining or believing. It preserves hope and imagination while showing ordinary readers how desire becomes more useful when it encounters reality, self-knowledge, and action.
Good starting place if…
You want a practical, research-based way to work with hopes and goals, especially if positive thinking has left you inspired briefly but has not helped you change what you do.
Know before you begin…
Oettingen studies motivation and goal pursuit, not whether thoughts exert a metaphysical attraction on external events. Mental contrasting can help a person recognize feasible goals and act on them, but it cannot remove structural barriers, guarantee an outcome, or make a person responsible for every hardship that occurs. Some readers may find its laboratory-and-study structure more methodical than spiritual.
