A LIBRARIAN’S ORIENTATION

What this book explores

A concise account of faith as ultimate concern, including doubt as an element within faith rather than its opposite.

EDITORIAL NOTE

Why it’s in the Library

It gives travelers language for commitment, doubt, and meaning that does not make certainty the measure of faith. The book also reveals how every life can be organized around something treated as ultimate.

Good starting place if…

Belief language feels too narrow and you want a serious theological account of faith as the ultimate concern organizing a life.

Know before you begin…

Tillich's existential and symbolic theology differs sharply from Christianity framed as assent to supernatural propositions. His compact argument is conceptually dense, and 'ultimate concern' can be misunderstood if detached from his account of idolatry and courage.
