Drawn from Henri Nouwen’s writings and course materials after his death, this volume presents Christian discernment as sustained attention to God through Scripture, prayer, community, desire, memory, relationships, suffering, and events. Rather than promise a private code for extracting divine instructions, it asks readers to notice recurring interior movements and to interpret a life’s direction within practices of patience, gratitude, compassion, and faithful action.

Why it’s in the Library
Nouwen offers a gentle alternative to anxious sign-seeking and instantaneous certainty. His approach is useful for travelers who still inhabit Christian language but want guidance to emerge through a whole pattern of life rather than a single feeling, verse, coincidence, or authoritative voice. The book belongs as a posthumously assembled spiritual companion rooted in Nouwen’s Catholic world. It does not verify that an impression comes from God or resolve decisions requiring external facts and expertise.

Editors Michael Christensen and Rebecca Laird constructed the volume from Nouwen’s published and unpublished material, so it is not a single manuscript he completed in this form. Spiritual interpretation is not a validated decision instrument: trauma responses, mania, coercion, anxiety, depression, and ordinary preference can all be misread as guidance. Discernment language must never override consent, evidence, immediate safety, medical or legal advice, or another person’s agency. Slow counsel is not always appropriate in urgent danger.
