A LIBRARIAN’S ORIENTATION

What this book explores

Sarah Hurwitz combines memoir with an inviting exploration of Jewish theology, ethics, prayer, holidays, texts, community, and approaches to God. Beginning from her own surprise at discovering a Judaism more intellectually and spiritually expansive than the version she had absorbed growing up, she introduces classical sources and contemporary practices as material for adult questioning rather than a list of ethnic customs.

EDITORIAL NOTE

Why it’s in the Library

It offers a warm doorway into Judaism as a living tradition of study, argument, practice, peoplehood, and belonging. For Jewish travelers returning with little prior literacy, the memoir can reduce embarrassment and make discovery feel possible; for non-Jewish readers, it disrupts the tendency to understand Judaism merely as Christianity's background. Its role is invitation and orientation, not conversion, comprehensive representation, or a final account of Jewish identity.

Good starting place if…

You want an accessible contemporary introduction to Jewish ideas and practices, especially if Judaism is part of your inheritance but has not yet felt intellectually or spiritually alive.

Know before you begin…

Hurwitz writes from her own American Jewish rediscovery and cannot represent every denomination, ethnicity, observance level, political location, family history, or relationship to God. The book ranges broadly but is neither an academic history nor a halakhic manual, and its personal route back should not become a standard by which other Jewish lives are measured. Non-Jewish readers should approach living Jewish practices as traditions to understand, not detachable spiritual techniques.
