Know before you begin…
Dawkins treats religion broadly and rhetorically, and philosophers, historians, theologians, religious-studies scholars, and some atheists dispute his definitions and arguments. Scientific competence does not by itself settle metaphysics or the social effects of religion. Readers carrying religious shame may find the polemic freeing or simply replace one rigid certainty with another.
